Media ID
The identifier returned when a file is uploaded to WhatsApp. Messages reference the Media ID rather than re-uploading the file for every recipient.
One term from the WhatsApp Business Platform glossary. Last updated 2026-07-25.
Uploading an image once and referencing its Media ID across a campaign is far cheaper than attaching the file to each message. The ID is scoped to your account and expires after a period, so long-running campaigns need to handle re-upload.
Inbound media works the same way in reverse: a customer's photo arrives as a Media ID that the platform downloads and stores, which is why media in an inbox is retrievable long after the original WhatsApp reference has expired.
