Message ID (wamid)
The unique identifier WhatsApp assigns to every message. It begins with 'wamid.' and is how delivery receipts, read receipts and replies are matched back to the original message.
One term from the WhatsApp Business Platform glossary. Last updated 2026-07-25.
When a platform sends a message, WhatsApp returns a wamid. Every later status webhook for that message — sent, delivered, read, failed — carries the same wamid, which is how a platform can show accurate per-message delivery state rather than a single campaign-level guess.
Inbound replies that quote an earlier message also carry the original wamid in their context, which is what lets an inbox thread a conversation correctly instead of showing replies as unrelated new messages.
