Glossary

System user

A non-human account inside Meta Business Manager that owns programmatic access to business assets. System users hold long-lived tokens so API access does not break when an employee leaves.

One term from the WhatsApp Business Platform glossary. Last updated 2026-07-25.

If API access were tied to a person's Meta account, it would break the moment that person left the company or lost a permission. System users exist to avoid that: the token belongs to the business, and the humans who administer it can change without interrupting message delivery.

For most businesses using a managed platform, the system user is created and handled inside Embedded Signup and never needs manual attention. It matters mainly when building a direct integration against the Cloud API.
